Fight climate change with

COOL ROOFING

Topps Products Cool Roof Coating Sustainability

When combined with an industry responsible for 37% of greenhouse gas emissions, these factors create a compounding cycle of heat and energy demand. As a result, urban environments can be anywhere from 2–15°C hotter than rural areas, increasing energy use, straining infrastructure, and reducing overall livability. Addressing material choices and design in the built environment is therefore a critical step in mitigating both global warming and the Urban Heat Island effect.

As 2023 marked the hottest year on record—and temperatures continue to rise—the need for sustainable solutions has never been more urgent to help reduce our impact on global warming.

In an industry responsible for 37% of greenhouse gas emissions, we have a responsibility to adopt sustainable alternatives and actively work toward lowering our contribution to this global crisis.

Urban Heat Island Effect

As global temperatures rise, the impact is felt even more intensely in cities through the Urban Heat Island effect. Urban areas consistently experience higher temperatures than surrounding rural regions because dark, heat-absorbing surfaces—such as roads, buildings, and roofs—store and re-emit heat throughout the day and well into the night. This effect is amplified by heat generated from vehicles, air conditioning systems, and a lack of vegetation that would otherwise provide natural cooling.

Cool Roofs & Reducing Urban Heat Islands

Offsetting CO2 with cool roofs

According to Statista.com, approximately 38 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide were emitted globally in 2025. To put that into perspective, it takes about 30 trees to offset just one ton of CO₂.

100 m² (1,000 sq. ft.) of cool roofing can offset an average of 28 tons of CO₂—an impact that would otherwise require planting more than 800 trees.

When implemented at scale across urban areas, cool roofs deliver benefits that extend far beyond individual buildings. By lowering roof and ambient temperatures, they reduce the overall heat retained within cities, directly helping to mitigate the Urban Heat Island effect. Cooler buildings require less air conditioning, which in turn lowers energy demand and reduces the greenhouse gas emissions associated with power generation.

This ripple effect creates measurable climate impact. As adoption increases across neighborhoods and commercial districts, cool roofs become a scalable, cost-effective strategy for reducing emissions, easing strain on energy infrastructure, and creating cooler, healthier, and more resilient urban environments.

Carbon Certificates & Corporate Social Responsibility

By applying Topps Products’ high solar-reflective cool roof coatings to a significant percentage of rooftops across urban and densely populated areas, we can create a measurable reduction in heat buildup and greenhouse gas emissions—delivering real climate benefits at both a local and global level.

In the Caribbean, for instance, where heat intensity, rising energy costs, and climate vulnerability are already significant, many communities cannot afford the upfront cost of installing cool roofs. Through Topps Products’ proven high solar-reflective cool roof systems—and the support of partners committed to carbon-reduction initiatives—these communities can gain access to affordable, heat-mitigating solutions. Expanding the use of cool roofs in urban and densely populated areas helps reduce heat buildup, lower indoor temperatures and energy demand, and contribute to meaningful reductions in greenhouse gas emissions.

As part of Topps Products’ commitment to corporate social responsibility and climate action, this initiative is dedicated to bringing cool roof solutions to vulnerable communities in the Caribbean. Donations made toward this program will be directly allocated to the installation of cool roof systems for those who would otherwise be unable to afford them, supporting climate resilience, improving living conditions, and delivering long-term environmental and social benefits across the region, and globally.

What are Carbon Certificates?

A Carbon Certificate represents the reduction or removal of one ton of carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the atmosphere, helping to cool the planet and combat climate change.

How You Can Make an Impact:

Individuals and organizations can purchase carbon credits to support projects that reflect heat back into space, reduce energy consumption, and cut harmful emissions such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). This financial support is essential—without it, these climate-positive projects would not be possible.

CALL TO ACTION:

Support the Initiative with a Carbon Certificate: By purchasing a Carbon Certificate from Topps Products, you directly fund the installation of cool roofs in vulnerable communities while contributing to global efforts to combat climate change and enhance the well-being of those most affected by rising temperatures.
