Meet the product that has been awarded the nations’ highest standard for continued energy savings – TOPPS SEAL™ carries the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star™ certification. Roof products that achieve this highest performance level have been recognized as able to reduce building energy cooling use by up to 50%. This payback not only pays dividends for users, but it saves the environment. Since 90% of energy in the U.S. alone requires fossil fuel – producing air pollution, smog, acid rain and global climate change – Energy Star qualified roof products are recognized as helping to reduce these air pollutants, the resulting “heat island effect”, and dependency upon oil. Energy Star qualified roof products must pass tests to reflect more of the sun’s rays over time. This means an extremely reflective surface that will not fade and will keep performing. The impact is simple. It can lower roof surface temperatures by up to 100ºF., decreasing the amount of heat transfer into the building. Benefits of Energy Star™ qualified roof products:
Frequent Questions & Answers How much can businesses expect to save by installing ENERGY STAR qualified products? Energy savings vary depending upon the geographic location and climate, existing insulation levels in the building, the type of surface replaced by the ENERGY STAR product, openings, and other factors, making it hard to accurately predict. However it is not unusual for a 10-15% reduction in peak air-conditioning demand. How does TOPPS SEAL™ save on future maintenance? The brilliant reflectivity of TOPPS SEAL elastomeric white roof coating immediately levels the rooftop temperatures to a cooler surface. It also protects against UV damage. This eliminates thermal shock resulting from cool rains on hot roofs and UV damage. These are major causes of premature roof failure. Under which circumstances will TOPPS SEAL generate the greatest savings? In general, building owners will save the most money on energy bills when the building has the following characteristics: high air-conditioning bills, a large roof surface as compared to the building’s overall size, lower levels of insulation, over a dark or dull colored roof or uncoated metal, and/or a location in a hot, sunny, climate. Will we save money even if we have a well-insulated building? Yes. Very simply, a cool, reflective surface allows your other components to work more efficiently. It also reduces maintenance needs later on. Can I expect the same level of savings over time? It is not unusual due to normal wear and tear, that some degradation of roof reflectivity can be expected. TOPPS SEAL reflectance measured five years after initial application, without cleaning, exceeded the requirements of competitive products when new. Many coatings, particularly ones containing ceramics or other particles creating a rough surface, require regular cleaning to maintain high enough reflectivity levels to qualify for ENERGY STAR. How do ENERGY STAR qualified roof products compare with standard roof products in terms of durability? ENERGY STAR understands that water tightness, durability, and longevity of a roof are the primary concerns of building owners. Participating manufacturers must back their compliant roof products with warranties that are comparable to their other roof products. How does a roof product qualify for the ENERGY STAR label? Roof products that meet or exceed solar reflectance without compromising product quality and performance, qualify for the ENERGY STAR label. These products must meet initial tests, and be tested years after application, to certify that they continue to meet the required demands. |
